Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.” (Luke 1:29-31)
So, Mary is hanging in her room, and an angel shows up. To say she was overwhelmed, scared to death, and undoubtedly rubbing her eyes and trying to slow her heart rate would be an understatement.
Gabriel calms her with a sweet “Don’t be afraid.” But notice, he didn’t give her time to think about it. He just kept delivering the message. Understanding the message would take a while, so let’s rip off the Band-Aid, tell it all, and then give her time to process – that had to be the plan!
I mean, just six months earlier he showed up to deliver news of Elizabeth’s miracle baby boy. He had practice, but you and I both know there is a big difference between a post-menopausal woman and a teenage girl. But being willing and able, Gabriel continued on!
What comes next would not only change her life, but the lives of all that would come after her. In just a few more characters than a tweet, he shares a lot of information. First, she is favored. With that favor would come something she didn’t ask for or even know was possible. Next, she would have a baby boy and name Him Jesus.
No detail is too small for God to deliver. You can almost hear him tell Gabriel, “She won’t get it, so let’s give her all the details to help her understand I’m in charge here.” As if that wasn’t enough to make her head pop off her shoulders, Gabriel went on,
“He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. He will sit on the throne of his father David and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever.”
(Luke 1:32-33)
Anyone else believe Gabriel took a big cleansing breath at this point?
The message was delivered, but his job wasn’t over.
Lord, we are so thankful for Gabriel and his willingness and ability to answer your call. These messages weren’t easy, even though exciting. You could have written these few words in the sky; but in Your wisdom, you knew it was Mary’s message first and only. Lord, thank you for the craft and care of the messages you send via angels and those laid directly on our hearts. May we always answer! Amen
