Mary.
OK, not to pick favorites, but she has to be one of mine. Y’all, she is one of those people I can’t wait to have tea with, although I’m sure she will wonder why.
I have so many questions! But in a select group of women in the Bible, we know quite a bit about her. We know she was a cousin of Elizabeth, engaged to Joseph (from the line of David), young, and loved God.
We can infer here that as a young Jewish woman, she would have memorized Scripture in Hebrew and would have done her school lessons in Greek. She probably lived near extended family (possible even on shared land) and spent most of her day doing chores. Even though she was around 13 years old, she was the prime age to be married; so, her family would have been happy to know she’d be taken care of.
But let’s get crystal clear here. When we are introduced to her, she’s just Mary. A daughter -- probably a sibling -- and a fiancé. Take a minute to think back to when you were 13. Where were your thoughts? What motivated you? What worried you? Mary would have been similar. While sitting alone in her room dreaming of when she would see Joseph again or just wondering what would be for dinner, an angel shows up. (Sit here a minute… an angel shows up! Can you even imagine?!)
In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” (Luke 1:26-28)
Wait. What? Don’t read these verses with beautiful violins playing in the background. It’s more of a needle scraping across an LP. Life got messy for Mary. In a blink, all had changed. And everything she knew was going to be flipped upside down.
Imagine being in the room. What do you see? How does it feel? Ask God to give you a fresh perspective on these verses and this precious girl as you prepare your heart for Christmas!
