This week we’re looking into John, Chapter 6 with our focus today being on John 11:35-39.
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.” (John 6:35-39)
Apparently, the crowd did not consider the miraculous feeding of the 5000 to be a sufficient sign, so they asked for another sign in order to believe in Jesus as the Son of God. After all, their fathers had eaten bread from heaven (Psalm 78:24) for years in the desert (6:31). Jesus doesn’t respond with another a sign, but He begins to teach them about the true bread of God – the bread that gives life.
In verse 35, we find the first of seven “I Am” statements found in the Gospel of John: “I am the bread of life.” For those who hadn’t been following along or who didn’t understand, Jesus states clearly that He is the true bread, come down from heaven, bringing life that endures to eternity. Just as he had done with the woman at the well, Jesus lifts the conversation from the physical to the spiritual.
Jesus speaks of the Father’s will, that everyone who believes in the Son should have eternal life, and that they will be raised on the last day. He repeatedly speaks of eternal life for those who come to Him (vv. 37, 44), those who believe in Him (v. 47), and those who eat of the living bread.
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (John 6:51)
This points us to the cross. It was necessary for Jesus to offer himself as the sin-bearing Messiah, to bear our punishment, to rise again in victory over the dark domain. Without His obedience to the Father’s will, He could not offer us bread that endures to eternal life.
It’s not enough to follow the miracles. Life that ensures is found only in coming to Him, in partaking of the bread of life.
