As someone that is fairly inquisitive, my favorite response during a conversation is, “tell me more.” It gives my brain time to really listen, understand, and come up with good follow-up questions without just blurting out a loud and unfeeling, “WHAT?!” In pure shock, I’m unsure I would have been able to utter “tell me more,” but could come up with a handful of questions!
Have you asked anyone else?
Who’s going to tell my parents?
You mean, now?
What about Joseph?
What will people say?
Are you sure?
Isn’t this impossible?
But instead, we learn something else about our Mary. She’s logical. It wasn’t about feelings or opinions; she leaned into biology. It makes me giggle that she thought she could thwart the whole thing in a detail that He had created.
“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.” (Luke 1:34-37)
Gabriel continued on with the loving and gentle message of the Father. “Oh sweet Mary, God is way bigger than you know. He’s going to knock your socks off with what He is capable of.” God’s plan was way bigger than birds and bees. He finishes the answer with “no word from God will every fail.” What’s impossible for God? Nothing.
Let’s not miss what comes between! Gabriel totally spills the beans. Wonder if he thought, “this will help her know I’m for real” or if God wanted him to tell her! At this point, people don’t know about Elizabeth’s big news. Good grief! Again, how much more information can this girl absorb?
You can imagine the next thing out of her mouth would be, “Wait. I’m having a baby without being married AND Elizabeth is going to have a baby being well past her prime? This is impossible layered with impossible!” But she didn’t…
Lord, tell us more. Tell us more about Your plans and what You have next for us. And yes, we can hear You say the same. We commit to tell You more, ask more, and listen more. Amen
