“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure, buried in a field, that a man found and reburied. Then in his joy he goes and sells everything he has and buys that field.” (Matthew 13:44)
This is the first parable we encounter about the kingdom of heaven.
Evidently burying treasure was practiced long before the use of banks, vaults, and safe deposit boxes. How else could 80% of movies have a treasure in them? The first treasure movie I remember watching was It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. The problem with buried treasure, and the main theme of that movie, is who do you trust to tell about the location? And if you should die before telling someone, the treasure could remain hidden for an indefinite period of time.
Perhaps the man in our parable stumbled upon the treasure. We don’t really know; but we do know that once he finds it, he decides to promptly return it to the ground. The treasure is now known, at least for the time being, only to him. The man is probably a peasant or tenant farmer and doesn’t have a lot of resources, but he knows that what he has just found is worth much more than everything he owns. So, he buys the field knowing that the contents of the treasure will then become his possession. As I write this, people are still taking a chance on a lottery payday with an infinitesimal possibility of winning the prize. With that in mind, the man in our story makes a very savvy business decision.
The man chose to separate himself from the treasure for a short time in order to be able to enjoy the treasure for a long time. In the short term, it cost him everything he owned, but it paid off big time in the long term.
That’s what the kingdom of heaven is like. When experienced, people want more of it and are willing to give up what others may view as important in order to do so!
What are you willing to give up for a short time in order to enjoy something far better for a long time? Perhaps it is some of your money. Maybe it’s some control or your most precious commodity of all, time. Maybe there’s a new habit or spiritual discipline you’ve been thinking about developing. While it will take some effort, it may help you experience the kingdom of heaven in ways you never thought possible.
