“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls. When he found one priceless pearl, he went and sold everything he had and bought it.” (Matthew 13:45-46)
Have you ever tried to explain something to someone only to get a dull look of “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Or is that just me? Well, maybe that’s what happened here, or maybe Jesus wants to highlight a different aspect of the kingdom of heaven for His disciples. In any case, Jesus quickly follows up the previous parable with this one.
In the parable we looked at yesterday, a peasant happened upon a treasure. In this parable, we are introduced to a merchant who has been eagerly and urgently searching for the finest pearl in the world. Imagine the work involved in learning about and tracking down this incredible find! We don’t know how long he searched. Perhaps years of planning have led to disappointment after disappointment, until… Eureka! He found it!
The merchant in our parable would have far more resources available than the peasant from the previous parable. In addition, he may have been saving and setting aside funds for quite some time. The result, however, is similar. He sells everything he has because he finds a pearl that, in his opinion, is the most priceless in the world. He is willing to give up everything in order to obtain this one pearl. It is so exquisite that he can’t live without it. Think for a moment, if the man hadn’t purchased the pearl, he, no doubt, would have walked away very sad.
That’s what the kingdom of heaven is like, or better yet, that’s what the kingdom of heaven is worth.
Fortunately, there’s nothing you can do in order to gain it, but an interesting thing to ponder is this: What would you be willing to give up in order to obtain the kingdom of heaven?
Here’s another way to look at it: Do you regard the kingdom of heaven as a priceless pearl worth giving up everything you have, or do you regard it as something you bought off the clearance rack or one of the many trophies you’ve collected through the years that is currently collecting dust or has been relegated to the attic?
Don’t wait to experience the kingdom of heaven! It is available to you today!
