What is the best gift you have ever given? Although we may not normally classify my answer as a gift, I am going with the engagement ring I gave Stacy. Thankfully, she accepted it, and it has led to a wonderful life over the past 20 years. Some gifts we give change our lives and the lives of those around us in significant ways.
Reading through Ephesians 4:25-32, I noticed an enormous gift we can give to others. Paul says, Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear (Ephesians 4:29).
This isn’t the only time he mentions the power of our words in Ephesians. In 4:15, he tells us to speak the truth in love. He addresses lying in 4:25: Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor. And in 5:4 he instructs with these words: Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. I think we should get the point.
When we think of our words, it’s easy to focus on how we shouldn’t use them. That is part of Paul’s instructions, but our growth in Christ isn’t just about stopping the sinful behavior; it’s also about putting on the new self (4:24). We need to focus on the power of our words to build up, encourage, and motivate those around us.
I need to be honest -- this is not my strength. I am not a natural encourager as my instincts often find what is wrong. But I don’t see an exemption from Paul that says, “only if it comes easy.” Using my words in a godly way takes grace-filled and grace-fueled focus. Though I have a long way to go, I do see progress.
How are you using your words? Are you building people up or tearing them down? Are you bringing constant complaints and grumbling or grace and peace? How would those closest to you answer these questions?
Take a few moments to pray about a positive way you can use your words today. Who knows, when you give grace to those who hear, it could be the best gift you could ever give.
