For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6 NKJV)
The beauty of this prophecy is in the fact that it was written 700 years before the birth of Jesus. This was a foreshadowing of the coming Messiah who would carry the weight of all humanity -- a message of hope for God’s people and at the heart of what the Christmas season is all about.
God fulfilled His promise -- good news that still gives us hope today. This verse describes who Jesus is: our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.
In a world full of darkness and greed, it can be difficult to decipher the truth, because culture points in a completely different direction than the Bible. Jesus came as a Wonderful Counselor to help us navigate the temptations and make decisions through the lens of what Scripture teaches. The more we pursue Him and grow closer in our relationship with the Lord, the less our heart is drawn to the desires of our flesh.
Jesus, the Son of God, transcends all things because in His sovereignty He showed His mighty power by dying on the cross and rising again. In no circumstance could we free ourselves from our sin and shame; but Jesus tore the veil that separated us from God, displaying the healing power that could only come from Him – the Mighty God.
Jesus came as the Everlasting Father who loved His children. He is our shepherd, and we are His sheep; and in His mercy, He tends and cares for us and never leaves. Often, in pride we try to do things our own way and stray from Him; but no matter what, in loving pursuit He brings us back to Himself. We can put our total trust in our good Father and give Him our whole hearts, because what He has promised is far greater than what the world has to offer.
In all that He did, Jesus carried Himself and related to others in peace. He came down from Heaven as the Prince of Peace and humbled Himself to bring unity to those who are followers in Christ. The Lord sees us through the washed blood of Jesus and calls us to be peacemakers with our brothers, sisters, and those who need the hope of the Good News.
So as the excitement of the Christmas season begins, let’s focus more on the gift of Jesus rather than the distracting things the world is offering.
