TThomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:28-29)
Why is it that otherwise tolerant people can become so intolerant when Christ is declared to be the only way to God?
Jesus made it clear when He said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Before the Sanhedrin, the Apostle Peter courageously declared:
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12).
And in his letter to Timothy, the Apostle Paul wrote: For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men—the testimony given in its proper time (1 Timothy 2:5-6).
Some may argue that God is not being merciful enough if He limits our salvation to only one way. People often ask what happens to the poor, innocent natives in Africa who have never even heard about Christ. The answer is that if there really were any truly innocent natives in Africa who died without hearing about Christ, they would go straight to heaven. The problem is that no one is innocent, no matter where they live. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).
God has declared His existence to everyone through what He has made (see Romans 1:19-20), and we instinctively know that we have violated His commands through the internal witness of our guilty conscience. So, we are all without excuse before a Holy God who demands perfect obedience from us. The only thing God owes us is His justice. For the wages of sin is death… (Romans 6:23a).
Rather than question God about the wisdom of His ways, we should be astonished that He grants us any way to receive His mercy and be reconciled to Himself. But because of His love for us, He sent His only Son into the world to redeem everyone who would turn away from their sinful ways and embrace His Son. If you belong to Christ Jesus, you are a part of God’s gift of love to His Son—a gift that was arranged even before the foundation of the world.
Once Jesus had revealed to Thomas that He had been raised from the dead, Thomas acknowledged Jesus as “My Lord and my God.” His faith was now complete. How about yours?
