Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)
The book of Ecclesiastes was written late in King Solomon’s life – approximately 3000 years ago. However, with the timestamp removed, we find that the same issues and desires plaguing human thoughts then mirror what you and I face today. Etched in the hearts of each of us is the desire for meaningful relationships – relationships not forged through screens and surface level connections.
The friends in my life reflect the generous and merciful nature of God. Long-time friendships bring forward our own broken pieces to form a special bond, a testament of God using His people to lift up His people.
We serve a God, who in His very nature, triumphs in community. The Creator of the world sent His Son to live among us. Therefore, we must remember Satan’s power is made evident in our isolation. I am all too familiar with the effects of choosing the lies of isolation over the intimacy of friendship. One time I was struggling with feelings of inadequacy and disappointment; and I kept those thoughts to myself, reluctant to share what was becoming a deep source of pain.
After a bit of time, a childhood friend asked, “How can I be praying for you?” And then a few days later, another friend, full of wisdom and love, called to meet and catch up. It took me by surprise, but these were invitations I desperately needed to hear. By the grace of God, I am even more familiar with the truth that two are better than one. God provided hands to lift me up and bodies to keep me warm. When I fall, the power of friends rooted in Jesus is stronger than that of Satan. They lift my face up to the Light, eradicating the darkness Satan wants us in.
Who is running alongside you? Who is engaging and sharing the significant moments of life with you? Let’s continue to learn the value of surrounding ourselves with people who can help sift through lies masked as tempting truths. Let’s challenge each other to press in rather than run away when sinful tendencies are exposed. This circle of friends -- many strands, not quickly broken -- is a platform for God to display His power through His people.
