This week’s theme is “End Time Ethics - if we are living in the last days, what kind of people are we to be?”
From the popularity of Agatha Christie’s books, Alfred Hitchcock’s movies, television crime dramas, and true crime podcasts, you could surmise that people enjoy a mystery. According to Wikipedia, there have been 190 (!) Hardy Boys mystery books, across four different publishers with multiple authors, and then 127 (!) more in a new series aimed at teenagers. I might have once had a brief literary crush on mystery-solver Nancy Drew.
We like to figure things out, and it’s been going on a long time:
Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that would come to you searched and carefully investigated. (1 Peter 1:10 HCSB)
What were the prophets trying to figure out?
They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when He testified in advance to the messianic sufferings and the glories that would follow. (1 Peter 1:11 HCSB)
What did they learn?
It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Angels desire to look into these things. (1 Peter 1:12 HCSB)
There will be things about God’s plan and timing that we just won’t get to find out this side of eternity. I think if we could know everything, we wouldn’t understand much of it. (Even angels want to look into these things.) But think about this - the ancient prophets didn’t get to know when Christ would come, but we can read all about it. We can even communicate directly with the Holy Spirit.
And if Old Testament prophets didn’t get to know when Christ would come, I can’t imagine why I’d get to know when He’ll come back.
Sometimes it may feel like we’re living in the last days, but I don’t think that’s a mystery God intends for us to solve. I’d argue He would prefer we embrace the mystery and get on with His work. The prophets had unanswered questions but that didn’t stop them from passing on what they learned to us. Instead of fretting over whether this could be the last days, and what I’m not allowed to know, what am I doing about the things I
do know?
