This week’s theme is “End Time Ethics - if we are living in the last days, what kind of people are we to be?”
I love Waffle House. It started when I was a kid. We’d go there during vacations, so it was always part of a fun time in general. Those memories make a Waffle House visit extra fun for me even today, decades later. I also suspect the open, diner-style environment attracts employees who enjoy interacting with customers more than a traditional restaurant with a kitchen in the back – exceptions may apply.
I once had an older,
very outgoing, Waffle House server who was convinced that I was a famous person that she couldn’t place. She was a character, so I just played along coyly and acted like
maybe she was right, but she was going to have to figure it out for herself.
(Side note: I realize this may have been her playful way of fishing for a healthy tip. I expect one of you to approach me in church with the same story.)
As I left, she asked one more time if I’d tell her if I was famous. I held up the receipt with my name and signature on it and said, “You’ll just have to google me after I’m gone.” An older man at the counter perked up and declared that he was going to use that line to write a country song – “Google me after I’m gone.” But I digress.
Waffle House serves hashbrowns that can be ordered as “Scattered, Smothered, and Covered” which means they are scattered on the grill to get them extra crispy, then smothered in sauteed onions, and covered with American cheese. It’s a treat for the senses. Here’s what got me to thinking about Waffle House hashbrowns:
Scattered:
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ: To the temporary residents dispersed in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 1:1-2 HCSB)
Smothered:
You rejoice in this, though now for a short time you have had to struggle in various trials… (1 Peter 1:6 HCSB)
Covered:
…And though not seeing Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy, because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls. (1 Peter 1:8-9 HCSB)
Scattered and smothered? You’re covered.
