Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:15-16)
If your children were scared of the dark or of what’s in the closet, you’d likely plug in a nightlight. If you were driving at night, even if it wasn’t the law, you would turn on your car headlights so you could see the road ahead of you. Remember the movie “Home Alone”? If so – you remember the houses had the automatic lights come on to distract the “wet bandits” from thinking nobody was home. The nightlight, the car headlights, and the automatic lights in the home are great human ways to light up dark places or cause darkness to “go away”.
So, if we all agree that those situations would require some kind of light, I’m curious if you agree with me that in our current workplaces, we have co-workers who are dealing with all kinds of darkness. Divorce or other family issues. Depression and anxiety. High stress environments. Maybe even something as severe as an addiction, a death, kids living in rebellion, or a disease like cancer ravaging their body.
In this case – let me ask you this. Does the Scripture above hit home that YOU may be the only light your co-workers have? Can you imagine what buying them a coffee or taking them to lunch might mean? Can you imagine what it would mean to them to have someone that would really listen?
A simple invite to church to hear Ron’s messages of love and hope might be just what the Holy Spirit needs to move in their lives. In the verses above, God doesn’t say it’s our requirement to give them an hour-long sermon on what’s wrong in their lives. It says, “let your light shine before others.” And our light is Jesus. All He needs is the vessel - we are the headlights and the light switch – Jesus is the light. How is He shining through you and me today? Are you a light in your workplace?
