“The Israelites will keep the Sabbath, observe Sabbath-keeping down through the generations, as a standing covenant. It’s a fixed sign between me and the Israelites. Yes, because in six days God made the Heavens and the Earth and on the seventh day he stopped and took a long, deep breath.” (Exodus 31:16-17 MSG)
I’m unsure how parents came up with it; but generations later, we still believe a deep breath can help in many ways.
Feeling scared to go off the high dive? Take a deep breath.
Stressed about your test? Take a deep breath.
Trip and scrape your knee? Take a deep breath (well… clean it off with an antiseptic, but then…).
A long, deep breath has many mental, physical, and emotional benefits. Which is why I believe God modeled it on day 7 – by taking that long, deep breath. And a few chapters later, He reminds us once again how important it is.
God reminds the Israelites how important the Sabbath is for their well-being. After having little control of their time for a long time, these people would have forgotten to rest, take a Sabbath or savor a long, deep breath. But now, in freedom, it was time to introduce these things back into their natural rhythms.
The Sabbath isn’t intended only for when you feel like it. Instead, develop a Sabbath mindset and take time to rest, connect with God, and grow. Plan something restful for the day, whatever that might be for you. Cooking, gardening, reading, journaling, biking, or visiting with a friend. Try to leave your phone out of sight or commit to not checking your email for the day. (Clutch your pearls; remember, this is hard for me too!)
What you choose to do on your Sabbath is up to you. Remember it’s not about what you can and can’t do; it’s about reconnecting with God, renewing that relationship, and finding your rest in Him.
