Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed; “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! … As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” (Luke 1:39-45)
Feeling overwhelmed, our emotion-filled teen mom packed a bag and got out of town. Remember earlier, we wondered if Gabriel meant to spill the beans on Elizabeth’s pregnancy? This is where we find it was divinely told. God wanted Mary to have someone to run to and somewhere to go. I can’t love this more. Mary hurried off to spend several months with Elizabeth and absorb everything before sharing with family and with Joseph.
We learn yet another thing about Mary! She had faith but checked facts. She wanted to be sure Elizabeth’s story was accurate. One pregnancy would have been a miracle, but two?
After a journey (what if she went by donkey!?!), she walked into Zechariah’s house and hollered from the front door, “Elizabeth! I’m here!” That’s it. Read it again. She didn’t have a chance to tell Elizabeth anything about her encounter with the angel; but as a servant of the Lord, Elizabeth already knew. Mary certainly had few thoughts that didn’t involve angels and babies and a list of questions a mile long. But before she could ask even one, Elizabeth filled her cup with peace. John leaped in her womb, and the Holy Spirit overcame Elizabeth. I can almost see Mary’s wide eyes and Elizabeth’s glassy with tears.
Mary had emotions and questions and there was nothing wrong with that. God welcomed them all. And while He can speak into our hearts, sometimes He uses brothers and sisters to say the words. This is one of those times. This time was exactly what she needed. Would she continue to ask questions, have hard days, and wonder why? Of course. But, for today she could take the first step to acceptance.
Think back on a time God used family in Christ to solidify His message or call. Take time in prayer to thank Him for giving you those people and the words you needed.
And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” (Isaiah 6:8)
