This week we’re looking at Philippians chapter 2.
Once upon a time I was on a treadmill in China. I was preparing for a half-marathon in which I hoped to achieve a certain finish time, so I was not going to let a little business trip to the other side of the globe spoil my plans.
Spoiler alert: I do not recommend trying to achieve a time goal in a half-marathon mere days after you return from an international trip.
There I was, pounding away on the treadmill, feeling pretty good about myself. This was a nice hotel with attendants at desks at the entrance to the exercise area. I wondered what the odds were that those attendants had ever seen anybody run so fast on their treadmill, or for as long as I was running.
Spoiler alert:
Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall. Better to be lowly of spirit with the humble than to divide plunder with the proud. (Proverbs 16:18-19 HCSB)
After maybe thirty minutes of running, a man five to ten years older than I entered the room. He strode to the treadmill next to me without even a pause to stretch, jumped on it and cranked that thing to a higher setting than mine and just went to town. He didn’t even ramp up to that speed; he just went right for it. In my memory it was like having a cartoon character next to me with only his head visible atop a chaotic, whirling ball of limbs.
This startled me, but I was confident that within a few short minutes he’d be off to do something else in the gym – surely he was just showing off and his pace wouldn’t last. But he ran, and he ran, and he ran. Eventually my workout ended, and I gave him a well-earned nod of respect when we made eye contact in the mirrored wall in front of us. Game recognizes game, as the kids say (or at least used to say).
As I passed the desk attendants I remembered wondering if I was maybe the fastest guy they had ever seen in their gym, but now I had an answer. I wasn’t even the fastest guy they’d seen before breakfast.
Do you feel good about yourself today? I truly hope so. God loves you.
Do you feel superior to somebody else? Be careful.
Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. (Philippians 2:3 HCSB)
