I am not one for New Year’s resolutions; but as I approach my mid-forties, this year was a little different. Looking down the road a few years, I want my body to hold up as best as it can. Knowing a New Year’s resolution wouldn’t work, I tried to beat the system and started going to the gym in February. I got off to a decent start, but then life got busy.
Speaking of working out, I love Paul’s challenging and encouraging words in Philippians 2:12-13:
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
Paul challenges the Philippian church and us to work out our salvation. To be clear, he isn’t telling us to work
for our salvation. Jesus has purchased our forgiveness and acceptance before God, which is free to us by faith. Working out our salvation means we put forth effort to live out the salvation given to us. What does this look like?
Just as a physical workout that benefits our bodies is not easy, working out our salvation isn’t easy either. In fact, it is impossible without the good news that Paul includes in verse 13:
for it is God who works in you. God isn’t on the sidelines simply cheering us on or barking commands for us to work harder. No, He is working in us to give us the strength we need. He is working in us to produce endurance. He is working in us to make us more like Jesus, even if the process seems slow.
Now is not the normal time for people to make workout resolutions. But when it comes to working out our salvation, the best time to start is now. Take some time to consider the health of your walk with Jesus. What area needs some spiritual sweat?
And if you haven’t received Jesus’s gift of salvation, start with that simple act of faith today. If you aren’t sure what that means, any leader at Immanuel Baptist Church would love to talk with you.
