Sometimes when life’s stressors close in on us, our faith in God’s plan is tested -- tempting us to rely on our own efforts to make sure things stay on track.
According to Romans 4:18-22, Against hope Abraham believed in hope with the result that he became the father of many nations according to the pronouncement, “so will your descendants be.” Without being weak in faith, he considered his own body as dead (because he was about one hundred years old) and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. He did not waver in unbelief about the promise of God but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God. He was fully convinced that what God promised he was also able to do. So indeed it was credited to Abraham as righteousness.
WAIT A MINUTE! Is this an accurate depiction of Abraham’s life? Aren't there chapters in Abraham's story where his actions betrayed his faith? What about when he misrepresented his wife as his sister before Pharaoh? Or when he fathered a child by Hagar? How is it that these episodes of doubt and self-reliance are omitted here, and Abraham’s faith is all that is mentioned?
Despite Abraham's shortcomings, God's faithfulness remained steadfast. This passage shows that God's promise is fulfilled not through human effort but through God’s power and grace. Our missteps and attempts to manipulate circumstances do not thwart His purposes. God's grace transcends our failures, and His purpose will be fulfilled.
When we lean on our own strength, we overlook God's provision. Just as Abraham's faith journey oscillated between doubt and trust, we grapple with moments of insecurity. God's promises stand unwavering regardless of our doubts.
In those instances when the temptation to control the situation arises, remember that our meddling is not a prerequisite for God's success. The work of Jesus, not our futile efforts, fulfills God's plan. Relinquishing control opens us to the beauty of divine providence.
Assess your journey. Are you relying solely on your strength, forgetting the power of God's promises? The story of Abraham reminds us that God's faithfulness transcends our imperfections.
