This week’s theme is “Christmas in the heart of God.”
If you could have one super-power, what would it be? I have been asked this question enough times in ice-breaker situations that I’m kind of tired of it. I usually just answer “flying,” because it’s easy and understandable. If I was more outgoing, I’d probably say something like “the ability to control the humidity” just to unsettle everyone.
My wife has a niche super-power. It’s the ability to anticipate, prepare for, and implement distractions for little kids on long road trips. I witnessed this in action dozens of times. One or both kids would start getting fussy. First, she’d distract them with questions to see if she could interrupt the spiral without squandering resources. Often that worked; but when it didn’t, right before either child reached a full-on meltdown, she’d say something like, “Oh, hey, look at these books I picked up at the dollar store yesterday!” Crisis averted. The right gift at the right moment can do wonders.
Sometimes I think about how God chose the timing of the first Christmas. Of course, it was the perfect time, or He would’ve chosen another. But why didn’t Jesus join us two hundred years earlier, or three-hundred years later? It’s not important to my faith, but I do wonder.
Most years I don’t feel like I’m ready for Christmas. It comes around too fast, especially as I get older, and stores and neighbors (and radio stations) start celebrating much earlier than I think they should. But Christmas comes regardless. And when I stand with our church, raise a candle and sing Silent Night with my family to celebrate, I’m no longer thinking I’m not ready. It washes over me every time.
The right gift at the right moment can do wonders.
Isaiah said, “Listen, house of David! Is it not enough for you to try the patience of men? Will you also try the patience of my God? Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:13-14 HCSB)
When our kids were handed their road trip gifts, they weren’t worried about how we would arrive at our destination. They just enjoyed the ride. Each Christmas we celebrate the best Gift anybody could ever be given, so let’s not let the world distract us this Christmas season.
