Be Prepared
Be Prepared

This week’s theme is “Christmas in the heart of God.”
I was never a Boy Scout, but I’ve always liked their “be prepared” motto. It appeals to my practical nature and strong desire to avoid hassle. The closest thing I have to a personal motto is “that doesn’t seem worth the trouble” but I admit it needs work.
I have an uncle with a great story about being prepared. When his service in the Air Force ended in the 1970’s, he drove his car all the way from his base in Alaska to his home in Kentucky. At some point during the trip, in the middle of one of those big rectangular states, far from a town, his car quit running. Not good. Then he remembered that he had previously heard that a small part on that model of car was prone to failure. It was not an expensive part, and not difficult to replace, so he had bought one and had thrown it in the glove compartment just in case. He dug out this spare part, swapped it, presumably whispered a short prayer, and turned the key. And then he drove the rest of the way to Kentucky. His preparation paid off.
God knew we needed a Savior and anticipated Christmas longer than we can comprehend. Don’t get me wrong - I’m not suggesting that God used Jesus like a spare part to be kept on hand “just in case.” Jesus is God, after all.
My point is simply this: God knew we could never be worthy of having a relationship with Him, and yet from the very beginning He prepared a way for us to have such a relationship. He planned Christmas for us in advance.
My uncle was thankful that his preparedness got him all the way home. As we anticipate another Christmas season, let’s reflect and be thankful that God anticipated that we would need Christmas to get us all the way to His home.
And He really wants to see us there.
“Your heart must not be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you. If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also. You know the way to where I am going.” (John 14:1-4 HCSB)
