This week’s theme is “Christmas in the heart of God.” As we anticipate the coming of Christmas this year, we’ll consider how God anticipated Christmas well before Jesus ever napped in a manger.
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6 HCSB)
Some of you will relate when I tell you about a book that was impactful on my childhood. I think about it this time of year, and it makes me simultaneously happy and wistful. It was the Sears Wish Book – a catalog that included fantastic photos of toys and smiling children. I went through the toy section over and over dozens of times every year. I lingered on the giant slot-car racetrack that was bigger than the floor of my bedroom and once scored a radio-controlled custom van that was among my favorite childhood gifts of all time. (If you want proof of awesomeness, just search “Sears Wish Book Thunder Van.”)
I
looked forward to looking forward to Christmas morning as much as I looked forward to Christmas morning. Growing up, getting married, and having children provides a whole new perspective on the anticipation of Christmas. And those of you blessed to be grandparents tell me there is yet another perspective I have not experienced.
I wonder if the pure joy, even if just for a moment, of witnessing a delighted child on Christmas morning as a parent is just a hint of what God feels when he looks over us in a sanctuary, singing Silent Night, our faces aglow even before we light any candles.
God knows what we want for Christmas, but He also knows what we need. He’s not just the best gift-giver of all time, He’s the perfect gift.
Every generous act and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights; with Him there is no variation or shadow cast by turning.
(James 1:17 HCSB)
My prayer for this Christmas season is that instead of being nostalgic for my favorite gifts received as a child, I will focus on the Gift who
was a child.
