You are well aware that I am a southern woman tried and true. I love a porch, sweet tea, football, and a good monogram on everything I own. I have embroidered initials on everything from boots to purses, luggage to hand towels, and hankies to sweatshirts. Anyway, I do love the way those entwined initials bring a bit of personalization to the item.
But have you ever flipped it over? Mercy. It can be a mess. There are threads and knots everywhere. You’d have a hard time finding where the letters begin and end. It wouldn’t be hard to figure out which is the side to show and which is the side to hide.
Peter reminds me of a piece of embroidery. We see the Peter that put down his net and followed Jesus with a simple invitation – and the one who denied Jesus three times. We see the Peter who said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” as well as the Peter that took his eyes off Jesus and fell face first in the water. But here’s the good stuff… the hope for all of those (us) that have fallen. God sees the messy underside – and loves us just the same.
He sees our desire to follow Him, our pain, our tears, our joy, and our temptations. Jesus didn’t give up on Peter and won’t give up on you. Peter felt discouraged, tempted, and backed into a corner more than once. Sound familiar? I know I have felt the exact same way! But I know and wholeheartedly believe that if Peter can make a comeback… anyone can (and yes, that includes YOU!).
So, take a minute – curl up with your heavenly Father, thank Him for grace, thank Him for the ability to make a comeback, and thank Him for the beautiful side with the messy underneath.
