Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee. He saw two brothers. They were Simon (his other name was Peter) and Andrew, his brother. They were putting a net into the sea for they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “Follow Me. I will make you fish for men!” At once they left their nets and followed Him. (Matthew 4:18-20)
Some time ago, I was on a flight; and most of the three hours in the air, the guy next to me poured over his Fantasy Football roster. He was doing his research for sure. He had three magazines and a notebook in which he made lists of 10. Then he would rank them in order of who would be his first pick.
I started thinking of who I would choose for my team. But then I quickly decided that a roster made up solely of UK and SEC players might not be the best effort on my side. Who was out there that I didn’t know? What talents would they bring to the perfect team?
After all we’ve learned about Peter this week, wonder why Jesus put him on his roster? His dream team? Build his church on Peter’s name? He was a simple fisherman. Hanging out with his brother just doing his job, and here comes a guy that says, “C’mon, follow me.” And he did! It brings such a big smile to my face and warms my heart.
Often in life, we find ourselves thinking once we get it together, find the perfect job, meet the right person, or whatever – THEN God will be able to use us. But I believe Peter’s story shows us the exact opposite. It’s not about getting it right and THEN serving – it’s about serving right where we are.
Would you be on Jesus’ fantasy team? You bet you would be! He is asking for nothing more than your obedience in following Him in faith and being aware of those around you.
Would you put down your net?
