For several years I have carefully chosen a word to guide my thoughts for the year. One year, nothing was coming to mind to use as my word. Well, actually, there were so many I couldn’t decide. So, in light of it being a woman’s prerogative to change her mind, I decided I would do a new word each month!
Then the month of August drew near. I love football. The crowds cheering, the crash of the pads, the way you hold your breath as the ball sails downfield, and the excitement when it’s caught right in the chest of a receiver. All of it. I just love all of it. As August began to inch closer, I started thinking of football terms to use as my August word. And, just as God would have it, it came quickly. The word would be “audible.”
In football, when the quarterback doesn’t like the way the defense sets up or sees a new play, he can call an audible -- a way for his team to know the play is changing and what new play should be run. The quarterback must be aware of everything around him, and his teammates must pay close attention to what he calls.
So, I spent that month of August listening. Just listening. Being ready when the Lord wanted me to change direction. That year the Lord gave me a new leadership position and a new job! To Him be the glory! Taking time to just listen – underwhelming my time and my schedule – left room for God to overwhelm my life.
One of my favorite books by Coach Tony Dungy combines two of my favorite things: football and faith. He writes:
We often can’t see what God is doing in our lives, but God sees the whole picture and His plan for us clearly. Just as a quarterback sees and hears everything, God can see the entire picture of our lives and His plan for it. What a relief to know He has our back!
Is He calling an audible in your life? Are you ready?
