The Good Shepherd Is the Door

Have you ever walked through a maze? Many of us have gone through a corn maze, but some may have also gone through a mirror maze or another indoor maze. The goal is the same. We enter, and then we need to find the exit. The maze is designed to make it as difficult as possible to do that.
In John 10, Jesus discusses with the Pharisees how He is the “good shepherd.” One of those ways He shepherds is by being the “door” or “gate” for the sheep. Jesus tells them:
“Truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them. I am the gate. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture.” (CSB 9-7:10 John)
The Pharisees were viewed as authorities on the law; the Jewish people looked to them as their authority figures. If the Pharisees placed heavy legal burdens on the people, the people would try to abide by them. And if the Pharisees required people to follow what was against God’s law, the people would follow that too.
Jesus is providing a clearer and simpler solution. The people can come to Him and find salvation. Not only that, but Jesus is also saying that He is the only way to enter and find salvation.
Jesus is making a strong statement here. He is not only saying He is providing a new way for people to come to God, but He is saying that the way they have followed is wrong! If Jesus was right, then the Pharisees would be out of a job!
Fortunately for us, we know that Jesus is right. All we have to do is follow Him. Jesus has made a way to God through His sacrifice for our sins.
