Change

Change. How does that word make you feel? Anxious? Excited? I am looking forward to the changes that let us know Spring is on its way. The trees start to bud and spring flowers start to peek from the ground. I know what to expect when I see these changes.
Generally, people don’t like change unless we know what to expect. Sometimes change can bring bad things. We don’t know what to expect or how to prepare. We can be afraid of the unknown. But we can take comfort in knowing that God and His Word never change.
Throughout Scripture we can read about the unchanging nature of God. Here are some verses we can cling to when everything else seems chaotic and changing.
The grass withers, the flowers fade, but the word of our God remains forever. (Isaiah 40:8 HCSB)
This was one of the first verses I memorized as a kid in Sunday School. Honestly, at the time, I chose to memorize this one because it’s short. It also made sense to me, and not all of Scripture is as simple and straightforward. But this verse makes a profound statement: the Word of our God remains forever! There’s comfort in knowing that.
For I the LORD do not change; (Malachi 3:6a ESV)
We all change, right? People don’t stay the same. Children grow up. We get older. I tell new parents that the most difficult stage of parenting is whatever stage you are in now, because you haven’t done it before. Even if you are not a parent, this is the first time you have been in this stage of your life, right? We are trying to figure it out as we go. But the LORD doesn’t change. We can count on Him and His unchanging nature for stability and for better guidance than what I have to offer.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8 ESV)
The Jesus we follow today is the same Jesus that walked on water and fed 5000! He’s the same Jesus that John wrote about in John 1:1-5. Jesus was there before Adam was created and will be there when our earth is destroyed. We can take comfort in knowing that He knows all about us yet still loves us enough to die for us. That will never change!
Amid the changing nature of our world, are you trusting in the unchanging character of the Almighty God? Have you found peace in the One who is the same yesterday, today, and forever? If so, would you join me in sharing the source of our hope and our peace with a world that needs Jesus?
