The Good Shepherd Lays Down His Life for the Sheep

First responders have received a lot of positive attention in recent years. They have endured through difficult circumstances and long hours. And because they have been deemed “essential” through all these times, they have had no “downtime.” We are extremely thankful for what they do.
Some may wonder why first responders keep working in these jobs. The hours are long, and the breaks are short. Many times, they are putting the safety of others as their main priority. Why not work somewhere else? But for them it’s an easy answer; for them, it’s a calling. There is a need, and they are called to meet it. How can you not help in that situation?
In John 10, Jesus, in a conversation with the Pharisees, tells them that He is the “good shepherd.” One of those ways He shepherds is by providing protection for the sheep. Jesus tells them:
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” ( 11:10 JohnCSB)
If shepherds saw a threat or wanted to keep the flock safe at night, they would lie down in front of the gate or “door” and block the entrance. This would keep the flock safe, and the shepherd would be the first to know whenever there were any problems.
What a beautiful and courageous picture of sacrifice! The sheep had no way to protect themselves, so the shepherds took on that responsibility. The shepherds were putting themselves in danger.
Jesus has provided protection for us too, as He carried to the cross the burden and the penalty for all our sins. We had no other way to be with God because of the depth our sin. Jesus ultimately gave His life so we could be with Him in eternity.
Find comfort in these words: “I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and my own know me, just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep.” ( JohnCSB) 15-14:10
