This week we’re looking into the story of Elijah and an unexpected provider – a poor widow.
So she went away and did according to the word of Elijah; and she and he and her household ate for many days. The bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke by Elijah.
(1 Kings 17:15-16)
As we wrap up this story, let’s think about some lessons we can learn from someone so forgotten by her world that she isn’t even remembered by name.
1 – When times are tough and we are weak, God is strong. God has told us,
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9) The widow was literally weak from hunger and anticipating death for herself and her son. But God had other plans.
2 - When God says He’s going to do something, you can count on Him to do it. He promised Elijah and the widow that her meager supply of flour and oil would be enough -- and it was! God’s provision did not just give this widow and her son – and Elijah – one more meal; God’s provision lasted until the drought ended – many meals later!
3 – Blessings are often connected with service and generosity. Luke 6:38 instructs us:
“Give, and it will be given to you. You will have more than enough… The way you give to others is the way you will receive in return.“
The widow was willing to share what little she had with Elijah – and was blessed far beyond what she could ever have dreamed.
4 – Trusting God DAILY is key. Each day, the widow didn’t KNOW that her flour and oil would be enough for another day. Each day, she had to trust that God would provide. And each day, I believe her faith in “a God who remembered her” was strengthened.
Where are you today? Are you in a place where you realize you need God’s strength? Are you having trouble believing God will do what He says He’ll do? Are you holding on to that which God wants you to release in order to bless someone else? Are you trusting God occasionally – but certainly not DAILY?
Father, help us learn the lessons from the widow of Zarephath, whom we will someday meet in heaven and know by the new name you’ve given her! Amen
