This week we’re looking into the story of Elijah and an unexpected provider – a poor widow.
God told Elijah that He had commanded a particular widow to provide for him. But after hearing about the teeny amount of provisions the widow had, you would think perhaps Elijah might say, “Oh, I’m so sorry – you must be the wrong widow!”
But no! He knew in his God-centered heart that she was the very person God had provided for him. So, he told her,
“Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son.”
(1 Kings 17:13)
Do you think Elijah had some difficulty asking this lady to fix him something FIRST? Or do you think perhaps he sensed that this would be a faith-evidencing and faith-strengthening moment for her? By being willing to give him all that she had, she was demonstrating that she believed that, although the world around her may have forgotten her, God had not.
Elijah proceeded to tell her God had promised him that her teeny bit of flour would not be used up, nor would that little bit of oil in the jar run dry – at least not until the Lord sent rain on the earth (1 Kings 17:14). And the unnamed widow went away and did just what he requested.
Hebrews 11 is often described as the Hall of Faith and is filled with the names of people who acted by faith: by faith Abel…, by faith Enoch…, by faith Noah…, by faith Abraham…, by faith Sarah…, and on and on. If that chapter were exhaustive, I believe the writer would have included a verse like this:
By faith, the widow of Zarephath, believing God, used the last of her flour and oil and fixed food for Elijah.
Although this woman’s name may be forgotten – in fact, we’ve never known her name – what she did in faith is amazing. She didn’t KNOW that there would be anything left after feeding Elijah. She didn’t KNOW that she and her son would ever break bread again on this earth. But she did know God – the One who had commanded her to provide for the prophet.
And that’s what faith is.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)
What is God asking you to do that requires a measure of that kind of faith? Let it be said of you someday:
By faith,
(insert your name here) believed God and courageously did what He asked.
