The Greatest Generation vividly remembers the day Pearl Harbor was attacked. Their children remember the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated. And their grandchildren remember September 11, 2001. For each of those generations, one particular day stands out as a day many thought the world was coming to an end. And their eyes were opened to the enormity of the evil in this world.
Many in the greatest generation responded to their event by volunteering to serve in the military during WWII. Hearts that were initially frantic became focused hearts determined to fight for our country. Others rolled up their sleeves and went to work in factories to equip our military forces. Lots of “taken for granted” items were rationed. Everyone had to make sacrifices as our nation focused on war.
Let’s learn some important lessons from that generation -- lessons that will have our hearts better prepared for these days that may be the end times -- lessons that will give us focused hearts rather than frantic ones:
My life verse is 2 Timothy 1:7:
For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. I did not choose this verse – it chose me. I have to know in the depth of my heart that when fear creeps in, it is NOT from God. Maybe some of you need to know that too. We must not let fear rule. Fear paralyzes; faith empowers.
Whether we are living in the last days or not, we must be preparing for that day when Jesus comes again – focusing our hearts and minds on what is yet to come. And God has equipped us to do just that – with His power, with His love, and with His sound mind. He has given us each of those attributes – let’s use them fully as we prepare ourselves and our world for that day.
