I used to think it was normal, no, expected to separate my faith from work. My faith was personal, for Sunday mornings and for me and my family in the privacy of our home. Work was public and required a different version of me: professional, secular, driven by worry about how much my manager or co-workers liked me. I believed that faith wouldn’t get me promoted or make me likable.
Separation of work and faith creates a segmented life, which is not the way God designed us to live and can lead to separation from God. In my experience, the farther we are separated from God, the less we hear Him and His purpose for our life. If we allow the noise of the world to drown out the voice of the Holy Spirit, we veer off the path God intended.
The good news is: regardless of the path you’re on now, God will use events, people, and sometimes difficult situations to create detours to get you back on your eternal journey - discovering your true identity in the kingdom of God. That journey must start with a life-union with Jesus, living a fully integrated life, and listening to Him all the time, not just on Sundays.
When I finally merged my false identities into an integrated, authentic version of myself, I learned that I’m not defined by my vocation or title. There is something far greater that God has specifically designed for me. Knowing my God-given identity allows me to hear Him more clearly and be much more fulfilled in my vocation and joyfully use my talents to glorify him. Hearing God through His Word, in prayer, and in my thoughts continues to transform my life and lead me to my true purpose.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2)
Each of us can influence people just by showing up to work every day – living out our true identity in Christ and demonstrating God’s love through our values, our actions, and our witness.
If you are worried or scared to share your faith, “do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say (Matthew 10:19). Be courageous, find your true self in Christ and let Him tell you how to live the integrated life that was designed just for you. Take your faith to work with you and experience God’s magnificent plan for your life.
