Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
Self-help books, TED Talks and meditation retreats fill up our minds; yet, we still stumble daily asking God to clearly answer our question: “What do you want from me, God?!” I have fallen to my knees countless times asking Him to make a path for me to see, hear and know what He is trying to tell me. The answers were often found in the stillness, in relating to Him as I read His Word and serve others before myself.
I believe the deeper our prayer life becomes, the more we see His Presence in all things. The boardroom at work, the fishing stream, the changing of a baby’s diaper, holding the hand of a dying loved one, or just sitting and listening to rain fall. God wants us to see Him, to know Him and to simply rejoice that we recognize the true God that provides for us daily.
Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24)
What do you do for a living? Don’t we all kind of dislike that question? It leaves us standing there with so much more we want to say. I believe we have so many opportunities each day in our walk with Christ to express the infinite through connecting our work with His will. After 20 years of serving families in the community through the healthcare industry, I have learned that my work is a reflection of His Word, His ability, His truth, and His voice living through me… with the hope of leading others to Christ as I surrender to Him daily in our fallen world.
So... what do I do for a living? What kind of work am I in? As a Christian, my answer is: I am in the business of discovering God in a deeper, continuous relationship, of knowing His love and being where He leads me, of being intentional in letting my work be evidence of Christ in me.
Go… keep rejoicing, praying, and giving thanks in the simplest of tasks of everyday life -- and when you’re standing in a valley that is too wide to see the way out. It all matters to God. Express your love for God in accordance with His design for you.
And we know for those who love God all things work together for good. (Romans 8:28)
