In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith -- more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire -- may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 1:6-7)
It is often difficult to trust God and His promises when we face trials. Those trials test our faith and demonstrate how strong our foundation in Him is. Troubles in this life are guaranteed. However, hope is offered through Jesus. Considering this truth, our response to trials should be to rejoice and stand firm in our faith in the Lord – both of which bring praise and honor to Him.
Our first response to difficulty usually is not rejoicing. In fact, most of the time we lean toward despair. However, the perspective in Peter’s message gives us hope. While we are promised trials in a world full of sin, we can cling to the truth that it is only temporary and will last just a little while. Our salvation is secured by Jesus; and since He faced the ultimate test by conquering death on a cross, eternity is promised with our Savior. We can rejoice because Jesus meets us right where we are and is our living hope, so we can stand firm in our faith in Him.
Our best response in the face of trials is to have an unwavering faith in God and His promises. Trials are a test of our faith and show how reliant we are on God. They also demonstrate how strongly we believe in His sovereignty over our lives. Those who remain in the Lord and trust His plan -- even when it feels like walking through fire -- have a faith “more precious than gold.” That kind of faith does not perish and shines brighter than the current situation we face. It also puts the focus on God and gives Him all the honor and glory. The Lord uses our trials to reveal His faithfulness in our darkest moments and points us to Jesus. When we see God work and bring us through the challenges of life, all we can do is give Him the praise.
This verse has spoken to my heart while our family has been dealing with health concerns and the uncertainty of knowing what to do next. However, one thing remains certain, that God is above all and has revealed His faithfulness through our trials. I pray this message is encouraging to you in whatever circumstance you face, knowing you have a Father who loves and protects you.
