Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. (Proverbs 19:21)
God has a purpose for His people. As Jesus told a crowd,
“And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day”
(John 6:39).
This week, we will look at the extraordinary means God used to save a Philippian jailer, who was a sinner just like you and me. We will also see how our attitude in the face of persecution for Christ’s sake can give us the right opportunity to share the gospel message with others.
Let’s begin with a reminder of God’s promise to the patriarch Abraham. The LORD told him that all the peoples on earth would be blessed through him. Through his son, Isaac, and grandson, Jacob, the nation of Israel would be formed. And this nation was chosen by God to be a “light unto the Gentiles” that would lead the whole world to God through the promised Messiah. However, when Jesus came and declared Himself to be the Messiah, He was largely rejected by His own people. Rather than worshipping Jesus for who He really is, they had Him crucified. But despite what God permits, His sovereign purpose never fails.
So, God chose and appointed Paul, who was formerly one of the chief persecutors of the church, to minister to the Gentiles. Paul and his missionary team, which included Silas, Timothy, and Luke, had their own travel plans, but God had different plans in store.
Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.
When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them (Acts 16:6-10).
God’s purpose was to bring Paul and his companions to Philippi so they could reach Lydia and the jailer for Christ, and thereby begin to establish Christ’s church in Europe. We too can be sure that God’s plan will unfold according to His will when we seek to follow and serve the Lord. We can trust that He is in control.
