Have you ever played hide-and-seek with a toddler? Isn’t it adorable when they do that thing where they hide their head someplace, like under a full-length tablecloth, and don’t even consider that their entire body is sticking out in plain view? They think they’re getting away with something, don’t they?
Yesterday we discussed what happened when Philip sought out Nathanael to tell him that Jesus, the Messiah had been found and that He came from Nazareth.
“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip. (John 1:46)
As an aside, we can learn something from Philip here. Have you ever had a friend express skepticism about anything related to Christianity? Maybe we don’t need to have all the answers. Maybe we just need to say, “come and see” and bring them to a church service or event.
We also discussed how Jesus observed that there “was no deceit” in Nathanael. Sure, he wasn’t very tactful, but he was saying what he believed. Now let’s look at what happened after Jesus made this observation:
“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” (John 1:48)
Jesus had noticed Nathanael even before his unfortunate remark about all things from Nazareth. This exchange had a dramatic effect on Nathanael’s attitude:
Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.” (John 1:49)
Jesus went on to tell Nathanael that if he thought Jesus noticing him under the fig tree in advance was impressive, he really hadn’t seen anything yet.
Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” (John 1:50-51)
Nathanael had just been hanging out under a fig tree harboring unkind thoughts toward Nazareth until Philip brought him to Jesus. But Philip didn’t exactly “introduce” Nathanael to a stranger. Jesus already knew where Nathanael was and what he was doing.
Are you still under your fig tree? Come out, come out, wherever you are. You will see greater things than that.
