One of these things is not like the others
One of these things just doesn’t belong
Can you tell which thing is not like the other
By the time I finish my song?
– “One of These Things” from Sesame Street
Sometimes not fitting in is a good thing. Maybe you don’t quite fit in at work or in your extended family because you once stood up against something that was wrong. It may not be pleasant, but it may be good.
Sometimes not fitting in is a bad thing. Maybe you are new to our church and haven’t yet found a small group or place of service to use the gifts God has given you. Don’t give up. Better yet, ask somebody to help.
Acts 2 tells us about Matthias, who took Judas Iscariot’s place among the twelve disciples. Until recently, some interesting details about Matthias had escaped me. I had thought of him as sort of a “next in line” situation, like maybe he was a “rising star” disciple who had been recently recruited and groomed by the more famous disciples. But that’s not how it went at all!
Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection. (Acts 1:21-22)
Matthias had been with them the whole time! He was faithful enough to stick around and eventually be chosen. Except even then he still wasn’t quite “chosen” …
So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles. (Acts 1:23-26)
The eleven didn’t really choose Matthias. They decided either Matthias OR Justus would suffice, so they essentially flipped a prayed-over coin (perhaps because the Holy Spirit had not come yet) and it came up “Matthias.”
Matthias could never be “quite like the others” because he was selected late. Justus was even less like the others because he was only nominated. But Matthias and Justus were nominated from “one of the men who have been with us the whole time…” This means there were yet others who had been followers from the beginning who didn’t even get nominated.
Have you ever felt overlooked and unappreciated? Jesus hasn’t forgotten you. Jesus knows your name.
