I don’t think anyone likes being ignored. I would argue having your children not listen to you is one of the most frustrating things as a parent. Whether they willfully go against what you say or just completely tune you out, it can be maddening. But let’s be honest, we are all guilty of this.
As we have considered how God speaks to us this week, it is important to end with our response. God speaks through His word and works in our lives for the purpose of changing us for His glory. His words are not idle so we should seek to be doers of the word and not just hearers (James 1:22). To help us with that, I want to end with a more practical devotional as we consider how all these ideas work together.
First, God has spoken through His word, the Bible. This is the Spirit-inspired and inerrant foundation for everything we know about God, how He works, and His purpose for His people. Everything that follows will be consistent with what God has said in the Bible.
Second, God’s Spirit works in our lives to help us understand and apply the Bible. Without the Spirit’s work, we could not connect what God has said in the Bible to our lives. But because God has given us the Holy Spirit, we can live out the general principles in specific ways.
Third, God will use His providence and people to refine the Spirit’s promptings in our lives. This refining can be through sermons, Bible study, or individual conversations. This could lead to repentance of sin, discernment in decisions, or a deeper understanding of God as you see Him at work in your life.
Fourth, we respond in faith to live out the Spirit’s promptings. We may not get everything right, but we can trust the Holy Spirit to be at work in our best attempts at faithful obedience.
If this is how God works to communicate in our lives, honestly assess yourself on the following questions:
Are you consistently in His word?
Are you faithfully praying and seeking God’s will?
Are you involved with God’s people?
Are you looking for Him to be at work in your circumstances?
None of us are perfect in these things. But take a moment to determine one action you will take relative to these questions. Trust the Spirit to prompt you in the direction you need to go. And may we all be doers of the word.
