As I was sharing with someone a method of Bible study I use on an ongoing basis, the question came up: Why do we study the Bible? While there are many good reasons, a story from the book of Daniel speaks directly to this question.
As Daniel neared the end of his life, most of which had been spent in Babylonian captivity, he had questions about his future as well as that of Israel. Thankfully, Daniel had the writings of Jeremiah to help him:
I, Daniel, understood from the books according to the word of the Lord to the prophet Jeremiah that the number of years for the desolation of Jerusalem would be seventy
(Daniel 9:2).
We have an advantage over Daniel in that we have the entire word of God to draw upon for wisdom and understanding – not just part of the Old Testament. Three things happened to Daniel when he turned to Scripture for answers:
First, he was convicted of sin. Not only personally, but that of Israel as a nation. This conviction produced repentance and a change of heart. After studying Jeremiah, Daniel realized that
we have sinned, done wrong, acted wickedly, rebelled, and turned away from your commands and ordinances
(Daniel 9:5).
The writer of Hebrews tells us that the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart
(Hebrews 4:12).
Second, he was comforted. Daniel understood that God was just and compassionate, and it was his understanding of these characteristics that gave him great comfort: For we are not presenting our petitions before you based on our righteous acts, but based on your abundant compassion. Lord, hear! Lord, forgive! Lord, listen and act! My God, for your own sake, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your name (Daniel 9:18-19). Through Scripture, we can better understand the character of God and trust Him in times of trouble.
Third, he saw things more clearly. Why was Daniel searching the Scripture in the first place? Because he lacked understanding about God’s plan for His people! Do you ever wonder what God’s plan is for you? The answer is to search His word, for
Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path (Psalms 119:105).
Because Bible study is important – as it reveals our sin, demonstrates God’s character, and provides clarity to our path – I challenge you to join me in spending personal time in His word this year.
