We take so many things for granted, and I don’t think it’s always a bad thing. God didn’t intend for us to worry about our next breath or constantly think about our heart beating. For the most part, those things simply happen as we live our lives. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t pause at times to give thanks for them.
What if I told you the Holy Spirit is similar? “Take God’s Spirit for granted, certainly not!” is a perfectly reasonable response and one I agree with (I did say ‘similar’ and not ‘same’). We shouldn’t take Him for granted, but His purpose is to point us to Jesus, not Himself. Listen to what Jesus says:
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” (John 16:13-14)
The Holy Spirit is like a spotlight that shines on Jesus. He works so we know who Jesus is, what He has done, and why we can continue to trust Him. Because the Spirit is more of a spotlight, it becomes easy to take Him for granted, like the air we breathe. But it does our soul good to pause and reflect on the Holy Spirit and how He works in our lives.
As our
Experiencing God reality for this week begins, “God speaks by the Holy Spirit…” This is what Jesus means when He says the Spirit will guide us into all truth. The Spirit was active in inspiring the biblical authors such that their words were God’s words (2 Peter 1:21). But He didn’t just inspire God’s word to be written and leave us on our own to understand it. He enlightens our eyes and hearts to understand what God has said, to see the glory of Jesus on the pages, and to understand how it applies to our lives.
He is active in other ways, but this is enough reason for pause and reflection. If you know God, it isn’t due to your intelligence, goodness, or effort. It is because the Spirit worked in your heart to reveal Jesus through the Bible. What a great act of mercy! Let’s not take this for granted. Instead, pause to reflect on the Spirit’s kindness in revealing Jesus to you. Then, pray He would do the same in someone else’s life.
