Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your
word.” (Luke 1:38)
This was Mary’s response to Gabriel when he told her she would conceive in her womb and
give birth to a son who would be the Messiah: “Let it be to me according to your word.”
We know very little about Mary when Gabriel pays his visit, other than a few facts: she was a
virgin, lived in the little village of Nazareth, had a relative named Elizabeth, and was betrothed to
a young man named Joseph.
Why was she able to make such a humble, yet confident, response to Gabriel’s message?
Here are some possible reasons:
1 – Growing up in a Hebrew home, she and her family would have been looking for the coming
of the Messiah. They would have learned about the prophecies from their rabbi. Some families
might have been praying that their young daughters would be the one chosen to be the mother
of the Messiah. Perhaps some were even Intentionally raising their daughters to be godly young
women for that very purpose!
2 - She knew who she was. She knew she was a servant of the Lord – nothing more, nothing
less, but quite enough – that was her identity.
3 – She knew who her Master was. The gospels don’t record the names of her parents –
apparently that doesn’t matter. But she knew she had a Heavenly Father – her Master – the
One who sent Gabriel with this amazing message.
4 – In her young heart, she knew obedience was the only way to respond to God’s messenger.
Because she knew who she was and because she knew her Master, her response was almost
matter of fact: “Obedience? Of course! How can I not obey my Master?”
Does obedience come as naturally for you as it did for Mary? Do you feel the need to consult
with others before stepping out in obedience? Do you count the cost and choose not to obey?
What would it take for you to be as humble and confident in your decision to follow God in
obedience?
Father, I love the simplicity of Mary’s response to Gabriel. I pray that You would give us the
assurance that our identity is in You – and that is quite enough. I pray that You would remind us
Your plans for us are better than anything we could plan for ourselves. Make our hearts tender
toward You and Your will for us, so that our response, like Mary’s, will be “Obedience? Of
course!” Amen
