Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor
rests. (Luke 2:14 NIV)
"O holy night! The stars are brightly shining; it is the night of our dear Savior’s birth" These
opening words from the beloved hymn “O Holy Night” transport us to that first Christmas – a
night that changed the world forever – the moment God’s plan of redemption began to unfold in
a stable in Bethlehem. Reflecting on this sacred moment, we are reminded of the immense love
of God, who sent His Son to bring hope to a weary world.
The hymn continues: “Long lay the world in sin and error pining, till He appeared, and the soul
felt its worth.” This line speaks of humanity being trapped in sin, and longing (pining) for
redemption. Without Christ, we are burdened by sin, but His arrival brings freedom and reveals
our worth. This truth of God’s love is confirmed in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that
He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have
eternal life.” Jesus’ birth marked the beginning of an earthly journey that would lead to His
ultimate sacrifice for our salvation.
The hymn’s refrain, “Fall on your knees; O hear the angel voices!” invites us to worship, just as
the shepherds and wise men did. In the presence of such a gift, our response can only be one
of awe and adoration. Philippians 2:10-11 proclaims, “that at the name of Jesus every knee
should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge
that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
This Christmas, let the message of “O Holy Night” draw you closer to the heart of God. Amid the
festivities and traditions, pause to reflect on the miracle of Christ’s birth. Let the night He came
to earth remind you of the lengths God went to bring light into darkness. Truly, “Christ is the
Lord! O praise His name forever!”
