“For I know the plans I have for you—this is the Lord’s declaration—plans for your well-being, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 (CSB)
My dad was in the Navy stationed in Kingsville, Texas; but in December 1964, he and my mom were on leave for Christmas in Kentucky. They had been trying for a long time to adopt. On December 23rd, my Mamaw suggested they call the local adoption office to see if there were any available adoptions. They called, and the person explained they didn’t have anything at that time. The next day, Christmas Eve, the office called back to say that a family originally slated to adopt a child had just contacted them to say they could not take the soon-to-be-born baby (me). Were they still interested? God has a plan. What a Christmas, and what an answer to prayer!
They made the 20-hour trip back home to Texas to sort out the legal documents. Meanwhile, on January 1st, I was born; and shortly after, the hospital contacted my new grandparents to come get me. Small towns in 1965 were more relaxed than today, but we’ll just call that an early form of foster care. I was with my Mamaw and Papaw for three weeks before my mom and dad could get back to Kentucky with the legal papers in order to claim me. Mom said they arrived to a big celebration of family and friends waiting with me to receive them. God has a plan for those who share in our life too.
I always knew I was adopted, and I felt special because of it. I have always felt that my parents were this amazing gift to me from God. Everywhere I was meant to go in my young life, they were meant to take me there, to share their life and teach me who God is. They would tell you they feel that I was His gift to them. I guess that’s how God’s plan is supposed to be realized, as an amazing gift to each recipient.
I have an incredible respect for my birth mother. I cannot imagine what she went through or felt. I think of this unnamed person who carried me for nine months, and I pray for her, for her family and that God is in their lives. God has a plan for them too.
If you feel that God doesn’t have a plan for your life, pray for Him to reveal it. Sometimes what God orchestrates takes time; but have faith. God’s plan brings more hope to your future than you could imagine!
