The television show “What Would You Do?” staged awkward, at best, and dangerous, at worst, scenarios. Hidden cameras watched as bystanders had to make a decision to get involved with the situation. Sometimes people ignored the situation, and other times they chose to get involved. The level of involvement of the bystanders was often relative to the perceived danger of the situation. There were times that viewers were left amazed at the amount of people who simply did not get involved.
God has invited His people to become involved with Him in His work. Yet, there are so many people who do not choose to get involved. Sadly, the Church today is full of bystanders. Ministers have to beg people to volunteer with children. Widows are lonely. There are make-shift bedrooms in most of the Kentucky foster care offices for children to live in while they await placement.
Christians are called to become involved and not simply watch others hurt. James says it like this:
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can such faith save him?
If a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily food and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, stay warm, and be well fed,” but you don’t give them what the body needs, what good is it? In the same way faith, if it does not have works, is dead by itself.
But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works. You believe that God is one. Good! Even the demons believe—and they shudder.
Senseless person! Are you willing to learn that faith without works is useless? . . . For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead. (James 2:14-20,26 CSB)
You have been invited by the Almighty God to become involved in His work of redeeming a lost world. What will you do?
