Rearing children isn’t for the faint of heart. As parents, we are supposed to take care of ourselves, be sure these little humans get through the day, and teach them a million life lessons in 18 short years. No pressure. One lesson I felt was important to teach was about using your words and asking. I often told my children to be prepared to hear a “yes” or a “no”; and if you’re prepared, then go ahead and ask!
Peter’s mother must have thought the same life lesson was important. He was bold and often not only said what others were thinking but asked the important questions for which he needed answers in order to follow Jesus wholly.
Matthew 14:22-27 tells us:
Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds. After dismissing the crowds, He went up on a mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone. But the boat was already over a mile from land, battered by the waves, because the wind was against them. Around three in the morning, He came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said and cried out in fear. Immediately Jesus spoke to them. “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
Let’s pause here and take in the words of Jesus: It is I. That should have been all they needed to be relieved of their fear. But leave it to our Peter to open his mouth – and his heart.
“Lord, if it’s You,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to You on the water.” “Come,” He said. And climbing out of the boat, Peter started walking on the water and came toward Jesus.
(Matthew 14:28-29)
Jesus said, “Hey guys, it’s Me!” and Peter responded with “if it’s you… show me.” On this side of the word, it’s easy for us to sit back, shake our heads, and say, “Oh, Peter, for real?” But let’s look from another vantage point. Who else got to walk on the water? No one. Because they didn’t ask!
Peter teaches us a great lesson here… almost as good as being willing to ask. Peter showed us exactly what to do – ask, wait for the response, then obey.
Where do you find yourself? Like Peter, ready to jump out of the boat and follow Jesus? Or more like the others, living in fear and waiting for safety? Different storms can invoke different reactions, but always be willing to ask.
Always be ready for a yes, no, or maybe… but ASK.
