Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. (Hebrews 2:17)
I would not want to face God, who knows everything about me and has the power to assign me to heaven or hell, without the best possible advocate when I die.
Therefore, I need a high priest who can speak well of me. Yet, I am a sinner deserving of everlasting punishment. Like the apostle Paul, I must cry out,
What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! (Romans 7:24-25)
The reason Jesus Christ can deliver me from eternal death is because Jesus, as our high priest, became a man just like me. But with one exception: He is also God. His death wasn’t a result of His own sin because He was sinless. He willingly took upon Himself the sin of His People and suffered the punishment we deserve. Therefore, God’s wrath toward our sins has been satisfied.
As our high priest, Jesus represents us before the Father. Our sins are forever removed from us, we are clothed with the perfect righteousness of our Savior, peace with God is restored, and we are adopted into the royal family of God.
There is only one condition which I must meet for Jesus to be my high priest. I must believe His promise to save me from my sin. This means I must be willing to turn my whole life over to Him so that He can lead me as He wills. By repenting like this, I’m committing to leave my former life of sin to serve Him and to become more like Him.
It is only fitting that Jesus has become our high priest, for God has chosen to place all mankind into one of two groups: those people who are represented by Adam and those people who are represented By Jesus Christ (aka the second Adam). Due to Adam’s sin, all mankind inherited a sin nature. We sin because we are sinners by nature, and unforgiven sinners will perish. But Christ came to give sinners a way out. Through Him, God acts justly towards us, while also being the One who makes us just, by identifying us with His Son.
This Christmas, remember you belong to Jesus Christ if you have placed your faith in Him alone. He is the lover of your soul. So, praise Him for it!
