The birth of Jesus we celebrate every Christmas was remarkable. This week, we’ll consider several different facets of His miraculous birth. We’ll see how His birth prepared Him to fulfill His role as our Prophet, Priest, and King. We’ll also see how His death and resurrection were necessary to reconcile us to God and glorify Him.
Today, we’ll see that Jesus had to come down from heaven to fulfill His role as our Prophet. By definition, a prophet is a person who speaks for God or a deity, or by divine inspiration. There have been many people throughout history that have falsely claimed to be a prophet of God. But God said,
“They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries and the delusions of their own minds.”
(Jeremiah 14:14)
This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD.” (Jeremiah 23:16)
The messages spoken by the false prophets were so harmful to the people that God made it a capital offense.
“…But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.” (Deuteronomy 18:20)
However, there are also those true prophets that God appointed in the past, who spoke only what the Lord instructed them to say. Since they would often rebuke the people of Israel for their evil doing, they were often put to death. But God revealed how the people could tell the difference between the true and the false prophets.
You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?” If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed. (Deuteronomy 18:21-22)
The truth about Jesus matters. When Jesus appeared before Pilate, the Roman governor, and spoke about His kingdom, He told him,
“…You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on this side of truth listens to me.” (John 18:37b)
Who else but the Son of God, who came down from heaven, could testify with absolute certainty about the realities of God’s kingdom? As you celebrate Jesus’ birth this Christmas, worship Him for His embodiment of the truth!
