Jesus – Born to Die

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5)
God is a God of justice, but at the same time He is a God of mercy and grace. As I wonder at this glorious truth, I can’t help but think, how could it be any other way? If God were not just, He would not be a good Judge. Yet, if He were not merciful and full of grace, nobody would survive His perfect justice.
I also find it puzzling, yet wonderful, to learn that our salvation comes from the Lord Himself. I can’t claim any credit for it at all. Even my faith, which is that which binds me to Christ, is a gift of God. If I claim any right to His grace, I miss the main point that eternal life is a
gift of God. But at the same time, it is an
irrevocable
gift. God will never fail to fulfill His good purpose in choosing those who are objects of His mercy.
How can it be that God would choose to send His only Son to suffer and die for the likes of you and me? While we were still sinners, Christ died for us!
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
(Ephesians 2:4-5) I share the same amazement over these precious truths as Charles Wesley, who composed the hymn, “And Can it Be”—
And can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain—
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, should die for me?
“Christ was treated as we deserve, that we might be treated as He deserves. He was condemned for our sins, in which He had no share, that we might be justified by His righteousness, in which we had no share. He suffered the death which was ours, that we might receive the life which was His. ‘With His stripes we are healed.’” (E.G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 25)
As we celebrate the birth of Christ this Christmas, let’s remember with gratitude the tremendous price He was willing to pay to reconcile us through Himself unto God. He must hold first place in our lives!
