For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)
Americans enjoy their individual freedoms. As a society, we cherish our right to do whatever we want to do unless we believe it keeps others from enjoying their rights. The trend over time has been to expand our legal rights, often without regard to God, who is the One who reveals in His Word the rights we truly have.
The truth is we have an authority that is higher than any human or institutional authority. This authority is the Lord Jesus Christ. Because He was obedient to death,
God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father
(Philippians 2:9-11). And Jesus acknowledged this authority. He said,
“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth”
(Matthew 28:18).
While Jesus may not be visible to us now, He rules as King over His creation from His exalted position at the right hand of His Father. For those who reject His rule, they will be held to account for every thought, word, deed, and attitude that is contrary to the will of God. But to those who love Him, He will be a source of great blessing to them. They will choose to obey Him because they love Him, and their lives are devoted to Him.
As James reminds us,
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows (James 1:17). How can you better submit to the Kingship of Jesus? Make this Christmas a time to place His will above your own as you give thanks for the perfect gift of Jesus.
