I am known as the Grinch in our house. I don’t get all that excited about Christmas lights, decorations, trees, etc. It isn’t that I don’t like Christmas; I just don’t care for all the fluff around it.
But Christmas does give all of us, Grinches included, a great opportunity to reflect on the joy Jesus brings. Our lives can often be filled with busyness, stress, frustrations, and fears. These things don’t go away each December, but the good news of Christmas can bring joy in all circumstances. As the angel said to the shepherds.
“Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:10-11)
The coming of Jesus is good news of great joy for the hectic and the organized, the stressed and the chill, the Grinches and the “Cindy Lou Whos.” It is a great joy because of who the baby is: our Savior, our Christ, our Lord. This baby didn’t come to immediately remove all strife, heartache, and trouble from our lives, though that day will come. Instead, He came to give us salvation in the midst of this troubled world. As He later told His disciples,
“In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
How does this bring us joy? Though the answers to this are many, I want to consider how the shepherds responded: praise. The angels kicked off the worship service, but the shepherds soon joined in. They rushed to see Jesus and afterwards left
glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen (Luke 2:20).
Worship brings us joy because it aligns with the deepest longings of our heart. We were made to know God, to love Him, to glorify Him. In worship, we respond to His perfect attributes and indescribable actions. We praise the One who is greater than any circumstance; the One who will one day bring an end to all things that seek to rob us of joy.
Today, take a few minutes to praise God for His good news of great joy.
Joy to the World might be a great place to start. Even Grinches can join in with joy.
