Good News Worth Seeking

The wise men are known for bringing treasure to Jesus -- gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Even though I am not sure what the last two are, we do know they were gifts for a king.
But what if the wise men were actually seeking treasure more than bringing it. Upon their arrival in Jerusalem, their intentions were clear.
“Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:2) When they finally found Jesus, the Bible says they
fell down and worshiped him (Matthew 2:11).
Since these wise men were likely pagans who worshiped multiple gods, we don’t know their heart in this act of worship. Did they see Jesus as a king to be worshiped like their other gods? Or did they recognize him as the King of kings, come to establish God’s kingdom on this earth? We will never know this side of eternity. However, we do know they were seeking a treasure greater than the treasure they brought.
Even though we don’t know their hearts, we know they paid a great price to seek this treasure. Their travel likely took a long time (my study Bible says it would have taken about 40 days if they traveled from Babylon). Even if only three wise men traveled, they likely came in a caravan for security. Once they arrived at their initial destination, they had to travel again to find the king they came to worship. None of this was cheap, but the cost they paid was worth it because of the One they were seeking.
What about you and me? Jesus doesn’t require us to travel great distances to find Him. We don’t need a caravan for security. And we have something better than a star in the sky to guide us; we have His inspired word, the Bible. Yet it is easy for us to get too busy or distracted to seek Him as we should. Yes, it might come with the cost of giving up some free time or expending energy to think. But the price is worth it, for Jesus said,
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” (Matthew 13:44)
The wise men went to great lengths and great expense to follow the star and find Jesus. All we have to do is pick up our Bible, open it, and there He is! Will you join me in committing to seek Jesus through His Word every day, and not just at Christmas?
